La La Lovely Lemons

Today, I want to discuss one of my favourite fruits……… oh I cannot lie, I have that many favourites I don’t actually know which one is my all time favourite fruit. Despite that, Lemons fit in that category nicely. So I would love to tell you a little bit about them.

Many of us love to have a wedge of lemon in our water. It is refreshing and you can feel it doing good things as you drink the water. For me, it actually makes me want to drink more water. We have all heard of the lemon diet which took the benefits of lemons to the extreme but just like anything, balance is key to any health and wellness program.

I love the smell of lemons – to me it is fresh, smells clean and crisp and wakes me up and lifts my mood. I love to use them in dressings, sauces, as a condiment, in beverages and meal preparation.

Why should we use lemons and why are they good for us?

  • Lemons are one of the most alkaline forming foods which makes them great for balancing acidic conditions for example heart burn.

  • Lemons are rich in Vitamin C and Flavonoids which helps support a healthy immune system

  • Lemon juice is a liver stimulant and a dis-solvent of uric acid so great for a detox

  • The pectin fibre in lemons aid in supporting a healthy colon; stimulating cleansing, elimination & regularity which can also aid in weight management.

  • Citric Acid contained in lemons can help dissolve gallstones, kidney stones and calcium deposits.

  • Lemons stimulate the digestive tract

  • May assist in reducing fever

  • May assist in maintaining healthy skin

  • A Lemon & Honey wrap may assist in soothing skin irritations

  • Lemons can freshen your breath

  • Lemons may enhance mood and improve energy

  • Lemon water may support a healthy respiratory system

  • Lemons can act as an insect repellent (cut one in half and insert some cloves into the flesh this allegedly will keep the bugs at bay)

  • Lemon juice can stimulate stomach acid production

  • Lemon juice can also aid in hydration; replenishing body salts after exercise

  • The vitamin C contained within lemons can support heart health

  • The amount of vitamin C and citric acid in Lemons can improve your absorption of iron from plant sources (non-heme iron) which is good for vegans.

  • Research has found that some of the compounds found in lemons have been proven to prevent cancer in animals and kill cancer cells in test tubes; there are no human studies as of yet, many things kill cancer in a test tube environment but that does not necessarily mean it will work on the human body.

So many reasons why we should include lemons in our diet. A good way to introduce them is to start your day with the juice of ½ to 1 lemon squeezed into a glass of warm water. This is a kick start to your digestive system which may in turn assist your metabolism.

Caution: The acidic qualities of the juice of a lemon can soften tooth enamel so it is always recommended to consume it diluted and wait at least 20-30 minutes after consumption to brush your teeth so the enamel can re-harden.

What about Lemon Essential Oil?

Firstly, you MUST ensure that it is pure and unadulterated (I will keep drumming on this point!!). If it isn’t, then what you use may cause more damage than good; ensure that you know exactly what is in what you are using.

Secondly, as the essential oil is a part of the plant from what it is named after, it is safe to say that any oil (pure and clean) will more than likely provide the same benefits as the plant itself aside from the actual fibrous content of the plant. In addition, the oils [if it is pure & clean], will be more potent than the fruit, thus less will be more (another point I will not stop drumming on about!!).

Lemon Essential Oil is a GREAT way to introduce Lemon to your everyday, not only will you use less but it will keep for longer. The Modern Essentials guide applies the following qualities to Lemon Essential Oil:

  • Anticancer

  • Antidepressant

  • Antiseptic

  • Anti-fungal

  • Antioxidant

  • Antiviral

  • Astringent

  • Invigorating

  • Refreshing

  • Tonic

Lemon oil is one of the most popular oils sold by dōTERRA and one of the oils most likely to be used on a daily basis.

  • Lemon oil may be used for occasional nausea Lemon

  • May support, maintain or improve health, wellness or structures and functions of the body like the heart, the liver and the respiratory system.

  • May relieve occasional constipation

  • Supports healthy skin and can sooth irritations

  • Treats mild acne

  • Immunity support

  • Helps with weight loss plan

  • Research shows that Lemon Oils contains anti-microbial properties and helps protect against listeria monocytogenes

Caution: It is recommended that if applying topically, you apply in an area that will not receive direct sunlight or avoid direct sunlight to application site for up to 12 hours to avoid possibly skin irritation/photosensitivity [please check out my blog “Photosensitivity…… what and why” for more information].

If both Lemon fruit and Lemon Essential Oil is good for me, which one should I use and why?

It all comes down to personal preference. It will depend on who you are and what you represent, what you believe in, what you support, and how this all fits in with who you are as an individual. What motivates you? Is it whole food, convenience, cost effectiveness, ethical farming practices, whether they use chemicals, if they are organic [although every country differs, what is your definition of organic and does it meet your expectations]? etc etc.

My personal choice is to use both; I love my lemon essential oil and use it [almost] daily but do like to use the occasional fresh lemon because the whole food has the fibre content that the oil doesn’t, but at the same time the oil has the concentration that the fruit doesn’t. It’s all about being holistic and applying balance which in my opinion opens up choice rather than closing it down. I would recommend trying not to give your self limitations but opening up to options you may not have yet properly considered.

Let me share with you this:

50 Lemons per 15mlLemon Oil graph[5084]

DōTERRA sell their CPTG Lemon Essential Oil in 15 ml bottles. It takes roughly 50 average sized lemons to make 15 mls of dōTERRA lemon oil. There is also *roughly 20 drops per 1 ml of oil which equates to *roughly 300 drops per 15 ml bottle. Average small lemon = 58g and large lemon 85g; for this example I will use an average of these figures rounded down to 70g per lemon. 50 lemons at 70g equal 3.5kg. At the time that this was written Lemons sold for:

Woolworths: $8.90 per kg; x 3.5 = $31.15 Woolworths Lemon

Coles: only sells per lemon at $2.00 per lemon; x 50 = $100.00Coles Lemon

Illawarra Fruit Direct (online store): $3.99 per 500g; x 7 = $27.93Illawarra Fruit Direct Lemon

DoTERRA CPTG Lemon Oil = $18.00 for 15 ml Retail; $13.50 for 15 ml Wholesale. Lemon Oil (2)

So as you can see, there is a huge difference in price when purchasing the oil in comparison to the fruit; in some of them a stupendous difference. If money is your motivator, then the oil is the best option. As mentioned though I use both, more oil than fruit but still both. Why limit yourself, open up your choices rather than limiting them.

[* Roughly – definition: each essential oil has a different consistency, some are thick and some are thin. As an average dōTERRA state 15ml contain 285 drops per bottle however, I am using the general standard measurement of 20 drops per ml – Lemon oil is one of the thinner oils thus this is more ‘accurate’ in my opinion.]

As always readers, if you have yet to commence your journey into the land of essential oils, it is extremely important that you have a trusted support person to give you guidance and advice if needed. If you are interested in learning more hit me up with an email or simply join my FaceBook and Instagram pages.

If you would like to look around and see what dōTERRA is all about click this link → DōTERRA link. I do recommend, however that we have a chat before you do purchase as I have said previously, I could possibly find you even more savings and get you some stuff for free.
